As an artist, I often find myself overwhelmed with ideas. In fact, a lot of times my hands can’t move nearly as fast as my brain and they end up causing my overactive mind to lose track of all of the fun little thoughts I had previously been thinking.
While less-than-lucid one evening, I came up with a brilliant invention called ‘The Mind Etch-a-Sketch’ (for the sake of this essay, we’ll just pretend that copyright infringement doesn’t exist in whatever realm that the Mind Etch-a-Sketch exists in… also that that name doesn’t simply suck. Yay. Pretend). The Mind Etch-a-Sketch is a nifty little device that actually looks more like a Lite-Brite casually combined with a Marvin’s Magic Drawing Board rather than an Etch-a-Sketch, but the colours and shapes appear on the black screen as you think in the same manner that they cascade and cut across an Etch-a-Sketch board.
In this way, we painters could eliminate the need to use our hands altogether when they became too slow for our purposes… or rather, the original purpose of my Wonka-esque invention was to record ideas and sketches like a writer scribbling down ideas for a story in a tiny, spiral-bound notebook the second the electrical impulses soar through his brain. Why can’t it be that easy for me? I guess it’s because my mind rolls around like a beautiful white dog who’s just hit the jackpot and found some colourful turkey excrement behind her house. That means out of control. (And, by the way, that is indeed a reference to my own white dog who I relate oh so well to, except for the rolling in of unsanitary gunk in the backyard).
But wait, I like to use my hands! I seem to have hit an impasse. My slow hands and hyperactive brain just aren’t good coworkers.
Where do you get artistic inspiration from? Whether it be for writing, painting, sketching, singing, etc.?
